    Married:
    • From "My Family and I" by Frederick Gurnsey:

'Alf and Nelly were married at about 8.30am on 30th May 1935 at Salem Baptist Chapel, Dover. This early time was chosen so that their friends working in shops could attend. They walked to the chapel, there were no wedding cars and no reception afterwards, and their honeymoon consisted of a day spent at Ramsgate, travelling there by bus.' [3]

'Memoriam' for piano, by Paul Willis
A short piano piece written by me in 1991 and dedicated to the memory of my grandparents, Alfred and Nelly Hopper (nee Gurnsey), both of whom died in 1991. The piece was played at Nelly's funeral in January 1992.
[The recording was made by Becky Waters, a friend of mine from the USA who as well as being a professional musician, teaches composition and Theory courses at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, AND is a Certified Hypnotist, Professional Breathworker, writer and speaker.]
'Grandad & Nelly' by Sue & James Daley
'Grandad & Nelly' by Sue & James Daley
Taken from their folk album 'The Ballad of Harry White', this track has music by James Daley and lyrics written by wife Sue Daley to celebrate the memory of her (and my) grandparents, Alf and Nelly Hopper. Sue writes, "I knew he had got it when one day James played the progression that he had been working on for ‘Grandad and Nellie’ it so vividly recreated my Grandad's gentleness and the joy we often saw in his gaze that I promptly burst into tears."

'The Hoppers at Home' - amateur recording
In about 1967 my dad bought a cassette recorded and used it to record everyday family life. One day my mum, then aged 21, took the opportunity to record a conversation with her parents and grandparents for posterity. In this recording are: Brenda (21), Alf Hopper (57), Nelly Hopper nee Gurnsey (55), George & Amy Gurnsey (nee Huggins) both 83.

My mother’s grandparents: Thomas HOPPER (1873-1916) and Emily Harvey (1880-1957)
Thomas Hopper, born in 1873, was my great grandfather. He died in 1916 from alcohol-related problems aged just 43; his wife, Emily, outlived him by forty-one years, struggling to raise their family of 8 children

  • Notes
    • From 'My Family & I' by Frederick Gurnsey:

'During World War Two Alf was conscripted into the army, the Royal Artillery and after the invasion of Europe in 1944 he served in France and Germany, and took part in the Liberation of Arnhem in April 1945.

During his wartime service he was taught to drive vehicles and to tow a gun and so, after the war, he broke away from the dead-end work as a gardener in a nursery and got work with the Folkestone and District Water Company, where he became a foreman. [3]
