    John joined the Mass 17th out of Newburyport first and was discharged for disability about 3 months later (assume it was malaria because that contributed to his death in 1910); he then joined the Mass 11th in Dec 1861 and served a 3-year enlistment, fought in most of the battles in the Eastern Theatre and was discharged at the end of that enlistment about 4 months before the end of the war.
