    In 1891 reports in the Northern Mining Register (a local newspaper) record that Joseph and a man named Charles F Philo were charged on remand with the manslaughter of a Chinaman named Ah Maie, who died in hospital on 25th January that year from the effects of wounds alleged to have been caused by Joseph and Mr Philo pelting him with stones.

    The prosecution case was heard on 28 Febuary, the remainder of the trial taking place on 8 May. Joseph and Mr Philo were eventually found Not Guilty of manslaughter.

    Jane Greenland was born in Dover in 1868, the eldest child of Jacob and Mary Ann Greenland. When she was 13 years old her mother died, and just two years later her father was tragically killed whilst working a night shift in Dover Harbour. By the age of twenty-two Jane was married and on board a ship bound for Australia.

    On 6 February 1891, The Northern Miner (a local newspaper) reported that Joseph had been arrested with his friend Charles Philo, both charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on a man named Ah Maie, a Chinese national.
