    My paternal grandfather, George Willis, used to tell the family legend of his grandfather, Jacob Greenland, and how he was ‘a Lighter Man on the boats. One night he was visiting a boat and on going down an iron ladder on a pier he slipped and was killed. He was doing someone else’s shift at the time.’

    • Interestingly, the 1851 Census for the West Bromich Union Workshouse in Staffordshire list among its inmates the Greenland family. Family head, Thomas [56, born in Frome, Somerset] was 'Master of Workland'. His wife Jane [40] was born in Tipton in Staffordshire. Of their five children, two of them were born in Tipton.
