'Dover Harbour' - a historical novel by Thomas Armstrong
'Dover Harbour' - a historical novel by Thomas Armstrong
Written in 1942 by author Thomas Armstrong, 'Dover Harbour' is a thrilling romance and a splendid piece of historical reconstruction giving a fascinating glimpse into life in Dover under threat of invasion by Napoleon. A little heavy at first, but as the story unfolds, it becomes difficult to put the book down.

'Grandad & Nelly' by Sue & James Daley
'Grandad & Nelly' by Sue & James Daley
Taken from their folk album 'The Ballad of Harry White', this track has music by James Daley and lyrics written by wife Sue Daley to celebrate the memory of her (and my) grandparents, Alf and Nelly Hopper. Sue writes, "I knew he had got it when one day James played the progression that he had been working on for ‘Grandad and Nellie’ it so vividly recreated my Grandad's gentleness and the joy we often saw in his gaze that I promptly burst into tears."

'Memoriam' for piano, by Paul Willis
'Memoriam' for piano, by Paul Willis
A short piano piece I composed in 1991 and dedicated to the memory of my grandparents, Alfred and Nelly Hopper (nee Gurnsey), both of whom died in 1991. The piece was played at Nelly's funeral in January 1992.
[The recording was made by Becky Waters, a friend of mine from the USA who as well as being a professional musician, teaches composition and Theory courses at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, AND is a Certified Hypnotist, Professional Breathworker, writer and speaker.]

'The Hoppers at Home' - amateur recording
'The Hoppers at Home' - amateur recording
In about 1967 my dad bought a cassette recorded and used it to record everyday family life. One day my mum, then aged 21, took the opportunity to record a conversation with her parents and grandparents for posterity. In this recording are: Brenda (21), Alf Hopper (57), Nelly Hopper nee Gurnsey (55), George & Amy Gurnsey (nee Huggins) both 83.

'This is my Life' by Clifford T Willis [pdf]
'This is my Life' by Clifford T Willis [pdf]
Born in India in March 1923 Clifford was the third generation of Anglo-British immigrants in the sub-continent. His grandfather, George Willis, had been born in Barham, Kent in 1871 and, after serving with the East Kent Regiment for 12 years he remained in the sub-continent, settling down and bringing up a family.
Clifford's autobiography, written when he was in his 70s, recollects his childhood memories of growing up in India, his career in the Indian Police Force, the family's move to their 'homeland' of England (where he was a village policeman) and eventual migration to settle in Australia. It's a fascinating read!
Clifford is still alive and well and both he and his close family are happy to share his memoirs with as many relatives as possible.
