NICHOLLS, George - Army Book
NICHOLLS, George - Army Book
George's Army Record book - still bound in it's leather cover - was carried by George from the date he joined the Royal Artillery in Dover at 15 years old until his death in India from enteric fever, aged 23. Sent back to his mother, Ellen, after his death, the book was passed down through her son Patrick Gorman (her son with George's stepdad, John Gorman, who Ellen married after Geoerge's father William died). I was sent it by one of Patrick's grandsons, who felt I would benefit more from it that he! It is one of the most treasured items in the Willis archives.

Studio Photographs
Studio Photographs
The most interesting period of studio photography artistically is considered by many to be between the 1860s and 1914, before the start of World War I in Europe. As studio photography came more and more into its own and became more and more viable commercially, the photographer developed different techniques and ways of displaying their client's image. This wasn't done just for creativity's sake, but also to create new types of product that would increase both business and profit.
