William was born in 1889 in Dover, England, the third of 6 children born to Edward and Elizabeth Arnold (nee Fisher).
In the 1901 Census William was 12 years old and living with his family in Dover.   Ten years later, in the 1911 Census he is recorded as being a crew member on board the ‘Victoria’, moored at the Prince of Wales Pier in Dover.
William drowned as a result of an attack by German submarine UB-39 on 23 March 1917.  The channel steamship Achille Adam SS was 31 miles off Beachy Head, Sussex on route from Saint Valery to Newhaven when she was intercepted and sunk.
As well as the Tower Hill Memorial, London, William is also commemorated on the SEC Railway Memorial (Marine Section) in Dover, Kent.
