Archie was born in 1894 in Sellinge, Kent to Edwin and Grace Gammon (nee Stokes).

He joined the Australian Infantry on 10 November 1915, aged 21 years old. His Attestation Papers tell us he was 5ft 11 and a half inches tall and weighed 130lbs (9st 4lbs). He had brown hair and brown eyes and was of a fair complexion.

Archie embarked for Military service from Melbourne on 23 April 1916 on board the RMS Malwa.

The Service Records also reveal a number of periods of illness, and three instances of being Absent Without Leave, as well as being ‘Improperly Dressed on Parade‘!

Archie was killed in action in Belgium on 2 October 1917. He was 23 years old.
