What happened to Elizabeth Anne Nicholls? Elizabeth's father, William, was a Gunner in the Royal Artillery and in 1870 was posted with his family to Fort St George in Madras, India. Within 10 years William was dead and his widow, Ellen, had remarried and returned to England. Of William and Ellen's children only one (my great-grandfather) returned to England with them. The two youngest - Charles and Henry - died before reaching their first birthdays. Of Elizabeth no record can be found in the either the Censuses or the BMD records. (Although its possible she appears in the wedding photo of her brother William in Faversham in 1895.)

Wedding of William Nicholls & Susannah Kingsnorth, 1895 William and Susannah were married at the Wesleyan Chapel in Faversham, Kent in October 1895. Many of those in the photograph taken after the ceremony have been identified, but some have not. For example, who is the elderly lady in the front row? And who is the young boy laid in front of the group?

A 'Memorial Portrait' of an unknown infant I recently discovered this 'memento mori' image among some previously unknown stuff but have no idea who it is.
In the late Victorian era, when someone died it was common for their loved ones to arrange for their photo to be taken. These photographs served as a keepsake to remember the deceased. This was especially common with infants and young children; Victorian era childhood mortality rates were extremely high, and a post-mortem photograph might have been the only image of the child the family ever had.
